On Monday, Jan. 19, a National Day of Service, Knights in Washington, D.C., distributed winter coats to needy children, in the latest addition to the Order's "Help a Child in Need" program. It was the first of three distributions scheduled for major cities in the United States.

At a Mass on May 3, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the passing of His Eminence John Cardinal O’Connor, Archbishop Timothy M. Dolan of New York initiated a National Prayer Campaign for Life, which is being co-sponsored by the Sisters of Life and the Knights of Columbus.

Ten years after his death, His Eminence John Cardinal O’Connor is remembered this week by the Knights of Columbus for his loyal service to the Church, for his courageous promotion of the Culture of Life, and for his long friendship with the Knights of Columbus.

Among the more than 14,000 Knights of Columbus councils around the world, several are on U.S. military bases. There are four active councils in Japan: Yokosuka Council 12488 on the U.S. Navy base in Yokosuka, Japan

The Knights of Columbus – in partnership with the Global Wheelchair Mission and HHS Foundation – April 27 distributed wheelchairs to victims of the earthquake that struck Haiti in January. In all, the Knights provided more than 1,000 wheelchairs to those most in need in Haiti.

Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the Knights of Columbus has donated nearly $1.28 billion to charity, and provided in excess of 612 million hours of volunteer service in support of charitable causes.

Many Knights and their families took part in the 36th annual March for Life in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 22, the 36th anniversary of the U.S. Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade.

As the nation marked the 36th anniversary of the Supreme Court’s Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion on demand the Knights of Columbus launched a new initiative aimed at providing women considering abortion a new way of viewing the life within them.

The new Form 100 membership document has been in use since October and is being warmly embraced by our membership recruitment teams. Due to changes in insurance regulations, all recruiters must use the new Form 100 exclusively.

Notre Dame Council 1477, the Order’s first college council, commemorated its centennial Monday, April 12, with a Mass, dinner and lecture at the university’s campus in South Bend, Ind.

Knights of Columbus are asked to pray a novena for Pope Benedict, beginning on Divine Mercy Sunday, April 11, and concluding on Monday, April 19, the fifth anniversary of the Holy Father’s election.

The Supreme Board of Directors, meeting April 10 in Philadephia, adopted a resolution expressing gratitude for Supreme Chaplain Bishop Lori’s contributions to the Order and the Church.

We are deeply saddened to learn of the death of the President of Poland, Lech Kaczynski, and many other senior leaders of the Polish government.

Knights raised and disbursed nearly $2.9 million to about 4,900 seminarians and postulants in 2009.
